NEW DELHI: According to a report by ICRA Ltd, a domestic credit rating company, India is likely to see 48,000 new Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers in the next 3-4 years. The rise in charging stations is in line with the gradual rise of the popularity and sale of electric vehicles. The government has also promoted EVs, amidst rising air pollution for the past few years.

While EV penetration is a global phenomenon, India has been slow to hop on the bandwagon, but the recent policy push has incentivised the private sector to enter the market and boost the EV industry. As of now, there are less than 2000 public charging stations concentrated mostly in urban areas, the report said. The impetus to the sector is expected to contain dangerous levels of nationwide air pollution and cut down on emissions to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5-degree Celsius.
