NEW DELHI: A study to understand the effects of COVID-19 on children found that they have a distinct immune response system towards COVID-19 infection in comparison to adults. The researchers found that common cold in children might be helping to develop some antibodies in them which is helping them to combat COVID-19 infection.
As part of the research, the blood samples of more than 300 adults and 48 children were tested and compared with 170 people infected with novel coronavirus. It was found that compared to children with 43 per cent, only 5 per cent of the adults have these antibodies.
The study was conducted under the supervision of George Kassiotis, Head, Retroviral Immunology Laboratory, Francis Crick Institute. However, this is not the first study which suggests different effects of COVID-19 on people from different age groups. Another study suggests that children who are infected with novel coronavirus rarely develop any respiratory or other symptoms.
