41% citizens support waste segregation: GCC survey

CHENNAI: A survey conducted by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in association with NGOs, indicated that more than 41 per cent of residents of the city are willing to segregate waste and support door-to-door collection.

The survey was conducted on May 12, via a door-to-door campaign with support from NGOs Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group and Kuppai Matters.

The volunteers from NGOs and sanitary workers of corporation started to visit households from from Anna Park in Royapuram, Anna Nagar Tower Park and Kasturba Nagar Community Hall. They visited households and raised awareness on the segregation of waste, and asked about their support for door-to-door waste collection. Volunteers visited a total of 4,112 households in the corporation limits, and as many as 1,697 agreed to segregate waste.

Around 80 sanitary workers from corporation and 18 volunteers visited the residential place in central Chennai, distributed forms and collected information from residents about waste management. A volunteer said, “In Anna Nagar, 1,920 households gave feedback. Of them, more than 50 per cent were willing to segregate waste. But many residents demanded bins for waste disposal.”
