2850 toilets to come up along Amarnath yatra route

SRINAGAR: In order to maintain cleanliness and proper waste management along the Amarnath yatra route, Satya Pal Malik, Governor, Jammu & Kashmir who is also the chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, on May 27, briefed on the sanitation arrangements made for the upcoming pilgrimage which include around construction 516 toilets on the route.

An official statement said, “All solid waste generated during the yatra shall be managed by the Pahalgam Development Authority, Sonamarg Development Authority and the shrine board in their respective areas. The waste will be disposed of in the identified garbage collection centres in Sonamarg and Pahalgam, where the required infrastructure as per the Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Rules will be put in place in accordance with the advice of the State Pollution Control Board.”

Umang Narula, CEO, Shirne board said that the board had planned to install 2,850 toilets and 516 washrooms along with 150 bottle catchers and 30 bio-bins along the yatra area. The shrine board will also be going to install a total of 1,515 garbage bins in three different color to collect biodegradable, non-biodegradable and segregated biomedical waste separately.

The meeting committee was also informed about the two decentralised sewage treatment plants that have been commissioned at the Baltal and Nunwan base camps.
