CHENNAI: In light of the ongoing water crisis in various states of the country, authorities in Tamil Nadu transported 25 lakh liters of water to Chennai. The water, which was extracted from a south Indian river, was transported from a railway station at Jolarpettai, which is located over 217 km from the state’s capital and the train started the journey at 1 am on Friday, July 12, 2019. The train reached Villivakkam station in Chennai around 12 pm where state ministers received it.
The water train will provide much needed relief to the carmaking centre dubbed “India’s Detroit.”
Chennai has become virtually dry because of mismanagement of water resources and lack of adequate rainfall this summer and this pushed the authorities to take the unconventional route to quench the city’s water requirement.
The train was supposed to move on Thursday, but leakages in valves connecting the tank to the railway station forced authorites to push back plans by a day, said officials at the railway station.
