16% vaccinated individuals tested positive for COVID-19: Study

NEW DELHI: A small scale study was conducted on 113 healthcare workers at a privat5te hospital in Delhi who are administered at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The study found that 18 of them tested positive for COVID-19 but all except one had mild symptoms. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal named Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews on May 3, 2021.

The participants in the study included doctors, nutritionists, nurses, paramedical workers and maintenance staff. 107 of the total 113 had received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The findings suggest that almost 16 per cent of the vaccinated people were infected by the novel coronavirus and 95 per cent of them had mild symptoms. All of the infected individuals had had symptoms including fever and half of them has sore throat and cough.

Of the total lot, 28 of them had received the Covaxin vaccine whereas 85 were administered Covishield. Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V are the three vaccines authorised for use in India with an efficacy of 81 per cent, 70 per cent and 92 per cent respectively. The researchers noted that the breakthrough infections in the people after adequate vaccination is a concern but proper data on these infections is not yet available.
