10M COVID-19 cases expected by next week: WHO Chief

GENEVA: Tedros Adhanom, Director General, World Health Organisation, said on June 24, that the number of coronavirus cases worldwide is likely to reach 10 million by the end of next week. The number of COVID-19 cases across the world currently stands at 9.3 million.

Tedros, during a briefing, backed Saudi Arabia’s decision of prohibiting the pilgrims from abroad from attending the annual Haj Pilgrimage to prevent the spread of virus.

WHO Chief further said that demands were surpassing supplies and they were now helping many countries which were facing difficulties in obtaining oxygen concentrators and devices that boost oxygen flow to support the breathing of COVID-19 sufferers.

Dr Mike Ryan, Emergencies head, WHO said that the pandemic situation is still evolving for many countries in the Americas and had not yet peaked and that it was still intense, especially in Central and South America. He added that the situation is likely to result in sustained number of cases and deaths in coming weeks and there were many countries in the region that have recorded 25-50 percent increase in cases in the last week.
