IMPHAL: The solid waste management activities under Imphal Municipal Corporation have been affecting Manipur, mainly the greater Imphal due to the lack of alternative waste dumping sites.

As per the reports, the locals from Lamdeng area under Imphal west district have prevented movement of the vehicles carrying the solid waste and their disposal at the waste management plant situated at Lamdeng which is in the outskirts of Imphal.

While protesting, the locals showed concern for failure of authorities to fulfil the long standing demand of construction of roads, fencing and construction of drains around the state’s only solid waste management plant at Lamdeng.

The door to door collection of the solid waste and other waste by Imphal Municipal Corporation and other 14 NGO’s affiliated to the corporation has been stopped from the last 4-5 days resulting in piling up of waste at residences, and the municipal waste that is being collected by vehicles of the corporation from the Imphal market area is dumped inside the corporation’s office which caused to the bad odour of solid waste all around.

A senior official of Imphal Municipal Corporation stated that “we are trying our best to get rid of the issue as early as we can”.

The municipal officials also said that the town generates more than 100 metric tonnes of solid waste on a daily basis and the vehicles of the corporation and other NGO’s takes the solid waste to the plant at Lamdeng for the further process.

It is to be mentioned that, around 65 per cent of the municipal waste generated in Imphal area is of plastic waste and rest includes electronic waste and others which needs to be segregated before dumping.
