VELLORE: The Vellore City Municipal Corporation (VCMC) has decided to install solar power to cater to its 129 buildings. S Sivasubramanian, Commissioner, VCMC, said on June 25 that the corporation has started numerous projects under Smart Cities Mission. Commissioner further added that once the buildings were solar-powered, by 2020 electricity charges for them would be nil.
34 projects are initiated at a cost of Rs 883 crore, said Sivasubramanian. State and Union governments have allocated Rs 212 crore for the schemes undertaken by the Corporation. Commissioner further informed that the water supply to the city requires 74 MLD of water whereas only 54 MLD is maintained. Out of this 30 MLD was being generated from the Corporation sources and the remaining supply was provided under the Combined Water Supply Scheme with rivers Cauvery and Ponnai as sources. Daily water supply was maintained in three wards, while in 10 other wards water was provided on alternate days. Other wards were getting water supply in 3-5 days and the duration of supply was extended to 3 to 4 hours.
