MANCHESTER: The University of Manchester(UOM) has become the world’s most environment friendly university according to the Higher Education Impact Rankings released by Times. The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UOM has done the most work towards the UN’s SDGs among 1200 universities in 98 countries.

Manchester also achieved a second place for work in relation to Life Below Water. In a bid to do extensive research work in the specific SDGs, the University mobilised urban living labs to create a sustainable infrastructure; established a standard for cleaner skies; and used innovative technologies to remove harmful pollutants from industrial wastewater.

UOM is the only university in the United Kingdom, which has social responsibility as a core goal. Apart from the research work, Manchester plays a leading role in tackling the SDGs in three ways: learning and students, public engagement activity, and responsible campus operations. UOM’s cultural institutions were continuously engaged in pioneering civic engagement work, students were engaged with the SDGs. UOM committed its operations to achieve a zero-carbon future, paying staff a living wage, and the quality of reporting of progress on each of the 17 SDGs.
