Thiruvananthapuram corporation to provide 50,000 more bins to residents

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram is all set to provide 50,000 more kitchen bins in households of the city. Till date, around 15,000 kitchen bins have been distributed to city residents who have asked for the same.

The bins are being provided by the Corporation free of cost to the residents for processing of waste at subsidised rate of Rs 60, for a packet of 10 kiloliters which is 50 per cent the original rate. The user of bins can either carry out the periodic maintenance of bins by themselves or can ask the service providers for the same at a monthly charge of Rs 200. The bins cost Rs 1,800 for one unit will remain under ownership of the local body.

These kitchen bins were introduced by civic body in 2016 as part of ‘My city, beautiful city’ a waste management project focusing on waste treatment at source.

The corporation is also going to celebrate its environment week; the celebration will end with celebrating World Environment Day on June 5. As a part of this celebration a ‘No Burn’ campaign and a composting mela is going to be organised by civic body across all the 25 health circles in the city. Bio composting kiosks will be set up in these circles, from where kitchen bins and inoculum can be bought. Special counter is going to be set up in these health circles to train people on how to use kitchen bins effectively.
