The Government of India recently declared that every citizen of India above 18 years of age will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination programme from May 1. Soon after the announcement, social media was filled with messages warning women against getting vaccinated during certain days of their menstrual cycle.
Claim:
The post/message getting circulated on social media claimed that women should not get themselves vaccinated against COVID-19 five days before or after their periods. It said that during these days of a woman’s menstrual cycle, their immunity decreases and makes them more prone to contracting the virus after the jab of the vaccine.
Reality:
Flouting the said claim entirely, numerous doctors have come forward and said that periods do not have any impact on the immunity of a person. Health experts stressed that there is no problem if a woman takes vaccine during, before or after five days of their menstrual cycle, until or unless that woman is planning for a baby in the immediate future. The GoI also quashed these rumors around periods and vaccination and the Press Information Bureau, in a very recent tweet, said that all people, irrespective of their genders and period cycles, can and should get vaccinated after May 1.
