NEW DELHI: On Saturday, Bhupender Yadav, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India said that developing sustainable consumption and production patterns is crucial to overcoming the climate change challenge.

Yadav stated at the inauguration of the ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement’ that it is essential that the world seeks solutions to tackle climate change not only through modern technologies, but also in the “wisdom of our collective culture, tradition and knowledge.” The movement was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who introduced the “LiFE Global Call for Papers” during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow last year, to invite ideas and suggestions from academics, universities, and research institutions around the world, in order to influence communities, and organisations around the world to embrace an eco friendly lifestyle.

Despite its developmental challenges, according to Yadav, India is devoted to furthering growth that leads to sustainable development and has made significant progress in areas such as clean energy systems, resilient urban infrastructure, innovative and sustainable green transportation networks, and planned afforestation. According to him, India has experienced the fastest growth rate in renewable energy capacity addition among all global economies during the last eight years. The current generation is responsible for safeguarding the rich natural heritage for future generations.
