Students in Delhi to raise awareness on pollution in Yamuna

NEW DELHI: Students of all the Delhi government schools are going to be involved in an awareness program, which initiates to save the environment and learning about the pollution in the river Yamuna. The students will also find new techniques and ways to reduce pollution in the river. 

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has laid down a detailed action plan. The awareness program will include, plantation drives and visits to wastewater treatment plans, will be conducted for over nine months. The action plan also includes various aspects of Yamuna pollution and lists the environmental activities that students need to engage in. 

The idea came in to existence when two-member National Green Tribunal (NGT)- appointed Yamuna Pollution Monitoring Committee had asked the education department to come up with an action plan and how lessons could be imparted to school students. 

The action plan would begin with the training of school heads with the following, eco-club charges and NSS programmer officers on waste management, sewage management, recycling of waste during May-June. The State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT), Delhi Jal Board and the Department of Environment and Industries along with NGOs will also develop a training module for the plan. 

Teachers will spread awareness via parent-teacher interaction; the students will practice activities in their communities. Along with segregation of waste, creating eco-friendly idols during festivals has also been recommended.
