NEW DELHI: Russia vetoed against United Nations Security Council draft resolution on December 13, which warns about the security implications of climate change. Russia raised objections to the creation of a new area for the council’s work that establishes a generic and automatic link between climate change and international security. This connects a scientific and socioeconomic problem with a politicised issue.
At the meeting to adopt the resolution, twelve security-council members voted in favor, China abstained, and India voted no. The resolution links climate change with global security challenges. India argued that the move attempts to undermine the hard-won consensus reached at the recently concluded Glasgow Summit. T S Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that the Security Council is not a place to discuss climate action and climate justice.
