PPCB to get rid of 350,000 kg consumer waste in Punjab by 2019

AMRITSAR: Aiming to reduce the plastic waste and amplify efforts towards plastic waste resource management, Punjab Plastic Waste Management Society (PPWMS) and about 25 Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies signed an agreement with Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to work together on a five-year consumer waste management programme. The main purpose to work together is to get rid of consumer multi-layered plastic (MLP) waste in a phased manner.

On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2,an MoU was signed by Krunesh Garg, PPCB member secretary and Sandeep Garg, PPWMS chairman in the presence of OP Soni, Punjab environment minister and Satwinder Singh Marwaha, PPCB chairman.

The PPWMS consists of 26 member companies including PepsiCo India, Perfetti Van Melle, Nestlé India, Dabur India, DharmpalSatyapal Group, Haldiram, Hector Beverages, P&G and Patanjali among others.

These companies will collect and process 11 lakh kilogram (1,100 tones) of post-consumer multi-layered packaging within the first year. The companies have decided to pay Rs 18/Kg to rag pickers to purchase their respective companies’ PCMLP wastes.

OP Soni said, “State government will work hard to include more FMCG companies into the mega project so that all the districts can be covered.”
