NEW DELHI: In his monthly national address ‘Mann ki baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the launch of a mass movement against plastic on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2. With the new movement, Modi wishes to make India plastic free.
The Prime Minister urged various corporate houses to partner with the government and make efforts towards achieving the aforementioned goal as it is imperative to efficiently recycle plastic waste, considering the fact that it is lethal for the environment. The call for a mass movement came days after the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address in which he had urged people to shun ‘single-use’ plastic to protect the environment.
With this, PM urged the citizens to participate actively in the ‘Swachhata Hi Sewa’ campaign, which will be kicked off on September 11 and conclude on October 2.
Modi underlined the importance of protecting the environment and advocated shift from “conservationist” to “compassionate” approach. His thrust was on preservation and nurture of flora and fauna.
He also announced the launch of “Fit-India” campaign on August 29—the National Sports Day. The government will also launch a campaign to focus on “nutrition” in September. “Malnutrition is a curse, which affects women and children who are the very foundation of our society,” the Prime Minister said.
