PM Modi inaugurates development projects in Lakshadweep worth Rs 1,150 crores

KAVARATTI, Lakshadweep: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various development projects in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, collectively valued at over Rs. 1,150 crores.

These projects spanned across sectors such as technology, energy, water resources, healthcare, and education. Notable initiatives included the distribution of laptops to students, bicycles under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and PM Kisan Credit Cards to farmers and fishermen beneficiaries.

In his address, PM Modi expressed admiration for the natural beauty of Lakshadweep and the deep affection of its people. He acknowledged the historical neglect of remote, border, coastal, and island areas, affirming that the government has prioritised their development. The Prime Minister commended the residents for their contribution to infrastructure, connectivity, water, health, and childcare projects, and underscored the government’s commitment to delivering various schemes transparently through Direct Benefit Transfer.

One of the key announcements was regarding the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI – SOFC) project, which aims to provide 100 times faster internet to Lakshadweep residents, benefiting government services, medical treatment, education, and digital banking.

PM Modi also highlighted the progress of the Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, ensuring piped water to every household in Lakshadweep. He recognised the innovative contributions of renowned ecologist Ali Manikfan towards the conservation of the Lakshadweep archipelago. The PM expressed satisfaction with the government’s decision to award Ali Manikfan with the Padma Shree in 2021, emphasising the commitment to fostering innovation and education among the youth of Lakshadweep.

The Prime Minister discussed efforts to boost India’s share in the global seafood market, particularly the export of local Tuna fish to Japan. He emphasised the potential of exporting quality local fish and exploring seaweed farming while ensuring the protection of the fragile ecology of the region. The solar power plant at Kavaratti, the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep is part of these sustainability initiatives.

Looking ahead, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to placing Lakshadweep on the international tourism map. He mentioned the Union Territory’s international recognition, citing the recently concluded G20 meeting held in Lakshadweep. Under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, a destination-specific master plan is being developed, showcasing the potential for tourism growth. The Prime Minister highlighted the development of water villa projects on Kadmat and Suheli islands, transforming Lakshadweep into a prime destination for cruise tourism.

PM Modi assured the people of Lakshadweep that the central government will continue taking steps to ensure their ease of living, ease of travel, and ease of doing business, contributing to a developed and vibrant India.
