NEW DELHI: Imran Hussain, Delhi Environment Minister, was awarded by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)-India for banning the ‘chinese manjha’, or the glass-coated kite strings, across Delhi.
Hussain received a ‘Hero to Animals Award’ by PETA-India for saving the lives of humans and animals by banning all forms of manjha throughout the National Capital Territory of Delhi
Hussain, in July 2018, had called for a complete ban on the sale, production, storage, supply, import and use of the ‘chinese manjha’ (kite flying thread), made of nylon, plastic or any other synthetic material, saying that the sharp-edged threads not only hurt birds and wildlife but also children.
He did this by directing the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to strictly implement the ban in the city during the upcoming festive season.
