CHENNAI: In a bid to provide the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) commuters better parking facilities, the company has started a new system under which the metro commuters can pay the metro parking fees via their smart card. From June 5, this new facility will start from Koyambedu Metro station, and then will gradually increase to all 32 stations across the city.
A CMRL official said, “So far, commuters paid parking charges in cash. Under the new system, they can swipe the smart card and leave quickly. The amount of time a commuter spends in waiting to pay and exit the parking space will certainly come down.”
It is estimated that earning of Chennai Metro rail is Rs 40 lakh from parking fees.
The company have been trying for a very long time to create a system for metro commuters to park their vehicles exclusively in metro parking space while preventing outsider from doing so.
An official said, “Over the past six months, we found several people who were not commuting by Chennai Metro but taking monthly passes and using our parking space while our commuters were not getting the parking slot they wanted.”
With this new system in the place CMRL has also increased monthly parking pass charges at some stations like Anna Nagar East, Ashok Nagar, Chennai Airport, Guindy, Mannadi, Meenambakkam, Nanganallur Road and Thirumangalam.
