SALEM: Salem Corporation has started demolishing the old bus stand, one of the icons of Salem city, in order to build a new bus stand under the Smart Cities Mission.
One of the prime projects under the Smart Cities Mission in Salem is the reconstruction of old bus stand into a two-tier bus stand at a cost of Rs 92.82 crore. This project is one of its kind as it is the first time a two tier bus stand is being built in the state. The bus stand has been designed in such a way that it would decongest up to 80 per cent traffic in the region.
According to Salem Corporation officials, demolition of old bus stand have already been started and the debris from the demolition site would be handled by the tenderer. Iron rods, roofing sheets and other metallic items from the site would be e-tendered by the Corporation.
The project is expected to be completed in two years and the new two-tier bus stand would have facilities like rooftop garden, parking and many others.
Meanwhile, the corporation had set up a temporary bus stand in Bose Maidan with all amenities at a cost of Rs 3 crore.
