Odisha rain: Jalaka and Baitarani rivers flowing above danger levels

BHUBANESWAR: After the incessant rainshower experienced in the cities of Odisha, two rivers have been flowing above the danger mark on Wednesday, September 16. Jalaka river, flowing through Mathani in Balasore, was at 6.63 metres. The danger level for Jalaka river is set at 5.50 metres. However, the water levels were steady after 06:00 AM today.

The Baitarani river was swelling across Odisha at 18.29 metres across Akhuapada in Bhadrak district against the danger mark set at 17.83 metres. The Central Water Commission released a statement informing that the water levels are soaring at seven different places in the state namely Kushabhadra, Brahmani, Burhabalanga, and Subarnarekha rivers. The famous Hirakud Dam, which has a total reservoir level of 630 ft, was at 628.39 ft.

On Monday, September 13, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in 12 districts of Odisha. Consequently, schools have been ordered to remain shut for the next two days i.e., September 14 and September 15.
