NGT instructs WB police to appoint DCPs in Kolkata and Howrah to check noise pollution

KOLKATA: In a bid to reduce the noise pollution levels, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the police force to appoint a deputy commissioner in Kolkata and Howrah to keep a check on the proper enforcement of noise pollution norms in the city. The police can nominate a DC or SP for both the cities independently to deal with the problem. The DC/SP (noise pollution) has also been entrusted with the task of coordinating with statutory authorities to coordinate with authorities for the seizure of equipment that violate noise pollution norms, cancellation of licenses and prosecuting the violators of the set norms.

NGT also instructed other authorities to report to the officer designated with the position and hold review meetings at least once a week. The tribunal also came down heavily on the state pollution control board and the state government for lax implementation of measures instructed them, pointing out that the direction on the dates fixed are not always followed.
