NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on December 3, 2018, imposed a fine of Rs 25 crore on the Delhi government for failing to curb the problem of air pollution in the National Capital.

A bench headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, chairperson, NGT, slapped the fine after knowing that the government had not complied with its directions to control the practice of open waste burning in industrial areas around Mundka in west Delhi.

The tribunal asked the government to furnish a deposit guarantee of Rs 25 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The bench said that despite clear directions, hardly any action had been taken on its orders and burning was taking place under the nose of authorities who were only furnishing “excuses”.
