Mission Shakti SHGs to revive 95 large water bodies under ‘Ama Pokhari’ scheme

BHUBANESWAR, Odisha: The Government of Odisha has begun the process for the restoration and rejuvenation of 95 large water bodies across 16 urban local bodies across the state under the ‘Ama Pokhari Scheme.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has inked an MoU with the Mission Shakti Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The MoU entails that the government will rope in 365 SHGs. Usha Devi, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, said the initiative is not only a step towards the revival of urban water bodies but also a journey of women empowerment, sustainability and community spirit, a true reflection of the 5T approach.

The minister urged the Mission Shakti groups to work hard and give their best efforts to revive water bodies under the ‘Ama Pokhari’ initiative, which she termed a success story to inspire all to work for ecological restoration.

G Mathi Vathanam, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Development, also praised the Ama Pokhari initiative. He said it aims to ensure environmental sustainability and, in the process, empowers women and paves the way for urban infrastructure development.

The Ama Pokhari initiative aims to revive nearly 2,000 large water bodies in 115 urban areas. Launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the implementation of the initiative will cost ₹120 crore to the government, and rejuvenation will be done in collaboration with the Mission Shakti members.
