NEW DELHI: National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) unveiled the look of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train which is planned to operate between Delhi and Meerut. The first look and design of the semi-high speed rail were unveiled on Friday, September 25. Currently, it takes people 3-4 hours by road to travel between the industrial area of Meerut and the National Capital Region. This transit system will instead take less than an hour and will come as a relief for people commuting daily between the two cities.

Durga Shankar Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) said, “It will bring down the travel time between Delhi to Meerut to just 55 minutes with 14 stoppages on way and 35 minutes by Express Service.” He also mentioned that the manufacture of 100 per cent trains and over 80 per cent of its components in value terms will be in India.

The foundation of the 82 km long Delhi- Ghaziabad- Meerut corridor was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 8, 2019. The train is designed to run at a top speed of 180 kilometres per hour and its prototype is expected to come out of the production line in 2022. The six-car RRTS train will accommodate 1800 passengers at once and is expected to carry eight lakh passengers daily.
