INDORE, Madhya Pradesh: Indore Municipal Corporation’s (IMC) pioneering efforts in recycling the banned single-use plastic after seizure has made it the first urban local body in India to get Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) credit.

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has congratulated residents and local administration for this brilliant feat achieved by the IMC.

IMC has also been winning the cleanest city award in the cleanliness survey conducted by the central government, that too, for the sixth time in a row. Harshika Singh, Commissioner, IMC, spoke with PTI on Tuesday, where she said, “Single-use plastic is completely banned in the city. We have seized about eight tonnes of such plastic in the recent past and stopped it from getting circulated. We recycled this plastic stock at a plant run under the public private partnership (PPP) model.”

IMC has been able to get a credit worth ₹8,100 on the EPR portal of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). As per Singh’s statement, IMC is the first urban local body in the country to have credit on the EPR portal for recycling seized single-use plastic.

IMC officials informed that around 1,162 tonnes of solid waste is generated every day in the urban local body, which includes 164 tonnes of plastic waste. This waste is collected from the doorstep of every household in the jurisdiction of IMC under three heads. Vehicles employed by the urban local body transport this waste for disposal in the waste processing plants.  CM Chouhan congrats the urban local body for its achievement and said, “As per the wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts are being made to promote a circular economy in Madhya Pradesh.”
