India’s COVID-19 cases pushed global tally up by 1% last week: WHO

NEW DELHI: The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday, September 1, that India had been the pioneer in the worldwide COVID-19 cases last week, registering approximately 5 lakh of the 18 lakh new global infections. WHO added that India’s COVID-19 cases have pushed the global figure up by 1 per cent.

The global health body noted that majorly due to rise in COVID-19 cases in India, South-East Asia recorded the largest week-on-week rise. In the past one week, India had registered almost 5 lakh new cases. However, in comparison to the previous seven days, there has been a 9 per cent rise in cases reported last week and the highest number of new cases worldwide, WHO said. Global coronavirus related deaths in last one week have gone down by 3 per cent in comparison to the week before.

Most number of new cases reported in Europe last week were from Spain, Russia, Ukraine and France, WHO added. The health organization also highlighted the upwards trend in Latin America and Africa.
