NEW DELHI: And we are back to COVID-19 headlines noting single-day spikes. India recorded a single-day rise of the COVID-19 fatalities by 2796, pushing the national death toll to 4,73,326, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, on Sunday, December 5. The overall COVID-19 cases tally increased to 3,46,33,255, as per the latest data.

Such a spike in daily caseload was noted on July 21, after Maharashtra ran its 14th reconciliation exercise for its COVID-19 data.

The union health ministry informed that the daily caseload spike was due to Bihar’s 2426 reconciled deaths which were adjusted in Sunday’s data. Kerala also had a backlog of 263 deaths which were consolidated on Sunday.

For 161 consecutive days, the daily rise in infections has remained below 50,000. Currently, the active cases recorded are 99,155 which is 0.29 per cent of the total infection count. The national recovery rate recorded stands at 98.35 per cent, informed the health ministry.

The recent update by the ministry stated that the positivity rate has been recorded at 0.73 per cent and the overall rate has been lower than 2 per cent in last 62 days. The ministry informed that over 70 per cent of the deaths occurring are due to comorbidities.
