NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has recently released a report which states that India collects 93 per cent of solid waste from households but only manages to process 57 per cent. The data highlights that 79,000 of over 84,000 urban municipal corporations in India collect waste from the doorsteps of households in their region. But, only 57 per cent of the 1.48 lakh tonnes of daily waste generated is recycled. The rest of the waste is dumped in landfills, the report added.

The report also highlights that out of all the states, Chhattisgarh has the highest rate in waste management while Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra perform the worst. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka are among the 14 states which have achieved 100 per cent waste collection. But the report also highlights that the states with maximum waste collection have the least efficiency in waste management.

Government is working towards achieving 100 per cent waste collection and management by 2022. To ensure this, the Centre has allocated a budget of Rs 5,023.96 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Along with financial assistance, the Centre is also providing alternatives for sustainable waste management to the States.
