HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has planned to add 160 more ‘She-marts’ (female public toilets) in the city, despite spending Rs 5 crore per zone on poorly maintained public toilets.
A civic body official put the blame of poor maintenance of existing public toilets on the private agencies maintaining them. The corporation has planned to install 60 new toilets in public parks and open spaces which are identified by the corporation. The civic body will introduce new toilets under corporate social responsibility costing Rs 12 lakh each. The official of GHMC said, the project will be implemented in a phased manner and during phase 1, 15 mobile women toilets and 60 stationary women’s toilets will be installed in public parks and open spaces in the city. Each zone under GHMC will have three mobile and 10 stationary toilets.
The GHMC official said that Rs 5 crore is spent per zone for maintenance and renovation of the toilets annually. To oversee the proper maintenance of public toilets in the city the corporation has decided to rope in major companies in the city and they will be penalised for substandard and poor maintenance.
