HYDERABAD: In an aim to prevent waste being thrown out in open areas and to stop the clogging of drains, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), on November 3, launched a 10-day special drive to collect disposable materials and scraps from households in the city. The program was launched after K T Rama Rao, Minister of Municipal Adminstration and Urban Development (MA&UD) instructed to conduct the drive.

On November 3, the GHMC staff went around the city and collected scrap materials from households such as broken furniture, old bed mattresses and unusable waste material, in a bid to prevent them to be thrown out in open nalas and roads. The purpose of the drive is not intended to only collect waste from households but to sensitise people about implication of such practices.

To make this drive successful, GHMC has involved various voluntary groups and organisation like NGO’s, RWA, and self-help groups who can be a part of this drive.

D S Lokesh, Commissioner, GHMC has instructed the zonal officers to monitor and submit report on daily basis.
