GHMC and HMDA focusing on vermicompost generation

HYDERABAD: For creating more green space in and around the city of Hyderabad, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) are now looking towards generation of vermicompost from garbage produced in and around the city.

B Janardhan Reddy, Commissioner, HMDA has directed the officials to generate vermicompost in the railway corridor areas of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) by digging compost pits one each in Forest Manager’s area. Hehas also directed the officials to obtain organic waste from neighbouring grampanchayats and municipal bodies for preparation of vermicompost.

Reddy directed the officials to ensure that dumping of non-biodegradable waste was prevented and the railway corridor was not used as garbage dump yard.

According to GHMC, everyday 5,280 metric tonnes of garbage is generated in the city and
2,510 metric tonnes of this is wet waste, 1,952 metric tonnes is dry waste and the rest 820 tonnes comprise of other waste such as e waste etc.

Out of 5,280 metric tonnes waste, 820 tonnes of waste is excluded and the rest of waste is used for generation of compost at the dumpyard.
