NEW DELHI: Sharad Arvind Bobde, The Chief Justice of India (CJI), in a hearing on Friday remarked that “There are many Commissions working, but at the end they have to be effective.” The remark came as a reply to Solicitor General’s statement in which he assured that the Commission to check stubble burning by farmers in the neighboring states of Delhi will start functioning from November 6.

On October 16, a Supreme Court Bench led by CJI S.A. Bobde, formed a one-man committee headed by Justice Lokur to prevent instances of stubble burning in the three states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. He was to be aided by volunteers from National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme and Bharat Scouts and Guides. However, this committee was put in abeyance after Centre formed a Commission for Air Quality Management encompassing Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to tackle air pollution in Delhi on 29th October.
