NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on January 1, 2019, stated that Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) has directed that only those vehicles which have RFID tags will be exempted from paying Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) at eight toll plazas in Delhi from January 3, 2019.

A senior SDMC official from the toll tax department said that the new system would come into force from January 3 at eight toll plazas where RFID systems are in place. These border points include Aya Nagar, DND Flyover, Shahdara Main, Shahdara Flyover, Tikri Border, Kapashera Border, Rajokri Border and Kundli Border.

The Supreme Court introduced ECC three years back for the largely commercial goods vehicles while exempting those carrying essential items like milk, petroleum, fruits and vegetables. “Vehicles exempted under any category must now get pre-registered at the counters established near the toll plazas and obtain RFID tags to get exemption. This is how we are incentivising it,”an official said.
