NEW DELHI: The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has ordered to impose ₹50,000 penalty on any authorized or unauthorized vendor for discharging septage at undesignated areas or directly into drains and sewers.

Due to septage discharge into storm drains, it directly flows to Yamuna leading to fecal pollution, causing water–borne diseases and a threat to aquatic life. Cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, and enteric fever can also be the root cause behind drinking such water.

The DPCC has further ordered to impose a fine of ₹10,000 for individuals using the services of unlicensed vendors for each violation.

“Officers not lower than the rank of Nayab tehsildar in the District Magistrate’s office, Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police, Sanitary Inspector in Municipal Corporation Delhi and Junior Engineers in the Delhi Jal Board and Irrigation and Flood Control Department shall be competent […] to impose the penalty,” DPCC ordered.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) appointed committee has expressed dissatisfaction as well about Delhi Jal Board’s failure to put a stoppage in dumping septage in drains.
