NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) slapped a fine of Rs 18 crore on the Delhi government’s Urban Development department for damage to the environment and non-compliance with the plastic waste management rules.

The Urban Development department passed on the fine imposed by the NGT to the North and South civic bodies. While South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has been asked to deposit Rs 7 crore towards “cost of damage to the environment”, the Northern body has to pay Rs 18 crore to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for “recovery of damages”.

The fine was imposed as per an NGT order of December 2018. The green bench had directed Delhi government to deposit Rs 25 crore within a month. An interest of 12 per cent was to be imposed for any delay, apart from a performance guarantee of Rs 25 crore within three months.
