NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, on September 23, rolled out the ‘Mukhyamantri Street Light Scheme’. Under the scheme, over two lakh LED street lights will be installed across the city.

The street light scheme which is scheduled to be implemented from November 1 onwards is the largest-scale project of its kind in the world including installation of 2.10 lakh 20 to 40 watt LED lights, said the CM.

The CM said, “We will not leave a single dark spot in Delhi…The government is committed to ensuring women’s safety. We are already implementing the CCTV scheme. The project is estimated at ₹100 crore and annual maintenance cost is ₹10 crore. This is the biggest step to be taken for women security.”

The citizens can submit their requests for installation of street lights to their local MLAs and post which the permission of the building owners will be taken, he added.

As per the CM, the street lights that will be installed under the scheme will be automatic, equipped with a sensor allowing them to turn on when it is dark and turn off at sunrise. He further added that such lights will be powered by electricity from the house of the owner similar to the CCTVs proposed to be installed by the government.

Talking about the power bill he said, since these street lights will be powered from electricity from the building owner’s household connection, the charge added to the consumers’ respective power bills for the operation for these lights will be deducted automatically.
