Delhi government to exempt road tax for electric vehicles

DELHI: Delhi government planning to make electric vehicle popular across the national capital. Hosts measures like exempting road tax up to 100 per cent, incentives on replacing old vehicles and construction of charging stations across city.

Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot says the government is ready with a comprehensive electric vehicle policy and it will be public soon. He held a meeting to discuss steps needed to provide robust infrastructure support in the city for promoting electric mobility. The meeting was attended by all stakeholders, power grid companies, power distribution companies, Indian Oil Corporation and Delhi government officials including those from the transport department. The minister didn’t mention the amount but said there will be substantial exemption on road tax for electric vehicle.

Currently, the road tax stands at seven per cent for vehicles that cost Rs six lakh and more. The electric vehicle’s price is between the range ofRs8lakh and Rs 12 lakh so one can save around Rs 70,000 on road tax.

He said that major incentives will be given for buying electric vehicles and also to those who want to replace their diesel and petrol vehicles with electric ones.
