NEW DELHI: On Thursday, Gopal Rai, Minister of Environment, Forest and Wildlife, Government of NCT of Delhi announced the introduction of a technology that will offer real-time data on pollution sources in the national capital in August.

According to him, Delhi will be the first city to use its apportionment method to determine the source of air pollution in real-time. After a review meeting with experts and officials from the Delhi Pollution Control Board, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, and The Energy and Resources Institute, he announced that a supersite of the “Real Time Source Apportionment System” will be established in a school at Pandara Road in Central Delhi.

The initiative will help to determine the causes of increased air pollution in any specific place in Delhi. It will aid in the comprehension of the effects of pollution sources such as cars, dust, biomass burning, stubble burning, and industrial pollutants. The government will be able to take the required steps to reduce specific sources of pollution based on the findings. Pollution forecasting will allow the government in making important policy decisions in advance, such as school closures, construction limitations, and vehicle restrictions.
