BHUBANESWAR: Odisha coast received heavy showers with high-speed winds as Cyclone Jawad hits on Saturday, December 4. India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the storm is likely to weaken into a deep depression before it reaches the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast.

Officials predicted that the cyclone will reach Andhra Pradesh by Saturday noon and move northwards during the next 12 hours. Cyclone Jawad will reach Puri around December 5, at noon as a ‘deep depression’.

Rajiv Gauba, Chief Secretary, Government of Jharkhand directed all the state agencies to ensure no life is lost and proprietary damage to be limited to a minimum. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has a total of 64 teams ready to be deployed in the affected areas. PK Jena, Special Relief Commissioner, stated that Cyclone Jawad will be causing landfall in the Pune district before it heads out to the Bay of Bengal.

The University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET), originally scheduled for Sunday, December 5, has been postponed in some centres of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal due to the cyclone.
