HYDERABAD: Hyderabad International Airport, under Gandhi Mallikarjuna Rao (GMR) group, has executed a pilot project to convert the traditional push button style elevators into a safer touch-less alternative, keeping in mind the security of passengers. As part of local engineering for innovation, this is designed with the help of infrared technology. It will work on the array of infrared sensors to detect the position of the finger while the person is waiting for the elevator.

While standing, users just have to wave their hands close to the sensor to call the elevator at any floor and while they are inside, they can just point at the floor number button and it will work accordingly. The sensor can detect the movement at a range of 0.1 to 10 cm. Telangana Airport handles around 20,000 passengers daily, which is increasing at a growing rate. It also has various other safety measures such as self-check-in kiosks, self-baggage drop, automatic entry gates, virtual information desk, etc.
