MADURAI: Edappadi K Palaniswami, Chief Minister, Government of Kerala, will launch a water supply project worth 1,295 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. Sellur K Raju, State Minister for Co-operation, addressed the media while inspecting the preparatory works ahead of the CM’s visit.

Raju said that the project would draw almost 12.5 crore litres of water from Mullaperiyar Reservoir and will act as a boon for residents of the city who face water shortage. In 1970s water in the city was distributed through lorries to residents in the northern part of Vaigai. It went on until 1980 when the city had just 20 tap water connections. Overhead tanks for water were constructed during the regime of J Jayalalitha, Former Chief Minister of the state.

Raju said that there was the long due problem of water supply in the city and resident complaints regarding sewage-contamination in old drinking water pipelines. For this, CM Palaniswami approved round the clock water supply scheme during MGR Centenary celebrations in July, 2017, he added. CM will also launch 12 completed projects worth Rs 69 crore, including the building built at the cost of Rs 30 crore, at the collectorate.
