CHANDIGARH: Yashpal Garg, Acting Deputy Commissioner, informed that election for the post of Mayor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will be held on January 17. As congress party has decided they will not contest this time, the local body is all set to witness a three-way contest.
Around 35 councillors and ex-officio members of the civic body will be eligible to take part in the voting process. The local body will get a Mayor, a Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor after the elections. Voting will be held through a secret ballot starting from 11 am on January 17.
The last date to file nominations is January 12, and the post of the mayor is unreserved this time, while last year it was reserved for a women candidate.
Sarbjit Kaur, the current mayor of the local body’s term is ending this week, but she will hold the position until her successor assumes office.
