CCMC to build 78 micro composting centres in parks

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) will soon build 78 micro composting centers (MCC) in the parks across the city. The corporation will take the waste from the parks which will be collected by the municipal workers, then it will be taken to the nearest MCC where it will be turned into compost. The compost will then be used as manure for plants, said an official.

The corporation has already floated tender for 25 MCCs out of the 78 MCCs. Each composting plant will have a capacity of processing half-a-tonne ora tonne of garden waste. The estimated cost of building MCCs is around Rs 5 crore.

The corporation is also in the process of constructing 65 MCCs in various parts of the city in addition to these 78 MCCs. The officials said that construction work of some plants have already begun in Kavundampalayam, Onapalayam, and at the Ward 44 office, near Nallampalayam.

The corporation is constructing 10 MCCs out of the 65 MCCs at a cost of Rs. 11.62crores from the funds provided under Smart CitiesMission, and another 10 at a cost of Rs 5.87 crore with its own funds. The rest will be built under Swachh Bharat Mission, for which the corporation has asked for funds from the State Government.

As a part of its plan corporation is planning to invest in small goods and carrier vehicles for the collection of waste across the city.

At present, the city generates around 860 metric tonnes of waste every day and 59 per cent of it is biodegradable, said an official.
