MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court was informed that the BMC had completed 85 per cent of the work to cover the manholes in the danger areas of the city’s flood covering. BSM said that this initiative has been aimed at preventing the accidents and deaths of people falling into open manholes during the rainy season.

BMC counsel Anil Sakhare filed an affidavit before the bench of Judge Ranjeet More and Anuja Prabhudesai. This bench is hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association. Last year, the gastroenterologist of Bombay Hospital, Dr. Deepak Amrapurkar, had fallen into an open manhole during heavy rains which led to his death. After this, the PIL was filed. Last month, the BMC had told the court that it has covered about 1400 manholes in the entire city with a fake mesh.
