TIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Bharathidasan University and ZIGMA Global Environ Solutions have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a cooperative project on ‘Microalgae-based bioremediation of municipal solid waste leachate’ for Rs. 8.05 lakh.
In the presence of M Selvam, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University and KP Mutharasu, Director, Zigma, signed the MoU including remediation of municipal solid waste leachate utilising extremophilic microalgae. After deducting 10 per cent for tax deduction at source, Zigma issued rupees 7.244 lakh to the university to complete the project.
Its services were afterwards hired by municipalities in Tamil Nadu and other states, allowing for the reclamation of hundreds of acres of land and their return to metropolitan and local governments. According to a news release provided by Bharathidasan University, the company got an Excellence Award in handling municipal solid waste from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2020. By collaborating with industry partner Zigma, Bharathidasan University gains a technical partner in bringing a proven ‘lab-to-land’ solution to bear on the problem of leachate in municipal waste landfills, a vexing task for both small and large municipalities, according to the Vice-Chancellor.
