WEST BENGAL: The West Bengal government on Tuesday, July 7 decided to impose strict lockdown in containment zones and buffer zones across the state from Thursday, July 9, to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state. However, it allowed the essential services to run as usual in these zones.

Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Home Secretary, West Bengal issued an order stating that the containment zones and buffer zones around them will be clubbed together and constitute a “broad-based” containment zone where a total lockdown will be imposed from 5 pm on Thursday. It added that local authorities will try and arrange home delivery of essential commodities for the residents of these areas.

The transport services have also been suspended in these zones and relaxations will only be given in green zones.

The development comes after the state reported more than 800 cases for three successive days. West Bengal has reported a total of 23,837 cases till Tuesday, July 7 and 804 people have succumbed to the deadly coronavirus.
