BCG vaccine effective in stopping COVID-19 infection: Study

NEW DELHI: A study by Dr Renu Agarwal, Medical Superintendent (MS), Uttar Pradesh, has revealed that Baccile Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine can help in OCIVD-19 treatment. BCG vaccine is used to treat children with Tuberculosis (TB) and it rapidly strengthens the immunity of body. The findings are published in Indian Journal of Applied Research.

In stage one of study, around 30 medical and paramedical staff working in Noida District Hospital were given BCG in April. None of them have become COVID-19 positive till now with a control group of 50 people of whom 8 became positive.

According to the published article, a group of 80 employees was constituted and 30 of them were vaccinated by BCG while rest were asked to work without vaccination. All these people were tested in every 15 days by using Reverse Transmission Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) technique. After a month, 16 of the non-vaccinated people were tested positive for COVID-19. Dr Agarwal said that she has been vaccinated from BCG and has remained free from COVID-19 until now.

Dr Agarwal said that when the COVID19 cases began to increase, the health workers of England, Italy, etc were given BCG vaccine which inspired her for the study.
