Air pollution may accelerate spread of COVID-19: MoHFW

NEW DELHI: Top officials of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development on Friday, November 6, that air pollution may accelerate the spread of coronavirus infections as it causes coughing, and sneezing. Official also asked the committee to find a permanent solution to air pollution in pan-NCR.

The agenda of meeting was to discuss upon the steps taken for control of air pollution and finding permanent solution to air pollution in Delhi and adjoining areas. The officials of Central Pollution Control Board and other departments discussed the on-going situation of air pollution in pan-NCR.

Mentioning a Lancet study, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that there is average loss of 1.7 years of life probability in India due to poor quality of air. The study also said that in Delhi there is 1.7 higher danger of respiratory problems and widespread of breathing problems. 10,000 to 30,000 deaths are reported every year due to poor quality of air.
